An Ocean Apart - Concert by Aureas Voces

A special Father's Day Concert for those who love music.

Join us Sunday evening, June 16th,  for Aureas Voces' new program entitled An Ocean Apart presented by Musique Royale.

In this programme, Aureas Voces pairs energetic and fresh arrangements of traditional Nova Scotian folksongs with airs, madrigals and motets from Renaissance England. Artistic Director, Nick Veltmeyer has arranged his seven favorite folksongs out of some 3,000 songs from the beloved Helen Creighton Collection. His arrangements uniquely balance contemporary and traditional interpretation of the ballads and songs of Nova Scotia, which represent a slice of oral tradition stretching back hundreds of years. Recording the experiences of voices that remain silent in history books, these arrangements from Helen Creighton's collection are universally relatable songs of personal triumph over struggle and grief. Pairing them with songs from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century shows the close and surprising connections between early music and folk music; from modal melodies, to ornamentation, to the emotional content of the poetry, the pieces on the programme resonate and speak to each other across centuries and oceans.

Aureas Voces is one of Canada's newest Early Music ensembles, founded by Nick Veltmeyer in 2018. The members of Aureas Voces are young professional musicians from Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto that have studied and performed historical repertoire across Canada and Europe. The repertoire of Aureas Voces is drawn from source material with an emphasis on both original arrangements of Canadian folk music and Canadian premieres of Renaissance vocal music. Each programme produced by Aureas Voces includes an element of unheard material.

"We commend Veltmeyer’s rigorous exploration and contemporary treatment of Helen Creighton’s collection in his showcase of some of the province’s timeless stories. Veltmeyer is a wonderful example of the potential that can be achieved through persistence towards creative objectives..." - NS Talent Trust

The 2019 Summer Season will feature virtuosic early music violinist Jeremy Rhizor, the founding Director of the Academy of Sacred Drama in New York City. Aureas Voces also welcomes back rising star soprano Janelle Lucyk to star in the 2019 season. (Click Here for more details on the group and program.)
